Benin bronze plaques are famously known for their representation of craftsmanship, artistic integrity, and cultural significance to the country itself. This French-speaking area was the original birthplace of the "voodoo" religion and has a rich history. Bronze plaques were used to decorate royal palaces. Many of these pieces are found in art galleries across the world, including Germany and the UK. These were created using the famous Benin Lost Wax method. The Lost Wax casting technique is when a plaster or baked clay mold is made over a model. When the mold is removed, the interior is coated with wax. The wax is then removed and a heat-resistant compound then is poured into the shape, creating a brand new mold which is then used to create the final product. This piece shows three men, one holding a spear and another holding a shield.
