Recycled glass beads are a commonly used medium in African jewelry. They are made in a process that requires glass to be crushed in a grain, then reheated to form the desired shape. Lastly, a cassava stem is placed in the malleable glass mixture as it is baked, hardening the glass and burning the stem away, leaving a hole for crafting. This process has been perfected by the Krobo people in Ghana, and a majority of recycled glass beads come from the Krobo.
