An exhibition with a 7,794 mile journey, Transatlantic Hemispheres includes the work of six South African contemporary artists, all of whom are based in Cape Town. The artists work in a variety of techniques and mediums which depict their own unique experiences within the current social and political climate of South Africa. All exhibition pieces were created after 2020, and broach subjects such as identity, migration, land, heritage, and language. Essentially prompting a collective examination of what art can be in a post-pandemic world.
Songezo Zantsi (1991) studied art and design at the College of Cape Town and graduated in 2017. Zantsi is a Cape Town born and based multidisciplinary mixed media contemporary artist. The intention of the artworks is to raise questions, open discussions, and provide answers. The question raised by this exhibition is about African culture and its traditions. How colonization has destroyed our traditional practices and let us misinterpret and be misinformed about our own identity, letting us glorify and assimilate to their ways. Zantsi critiques the use of Western elements in traditional ceremonies, throwing into relief questions about where and how culture and traditions are formed.
