An exhibition with a 7,794 mile journey, Transatlantic Hemispheres includes the work of six South African contemporary artists, all of whom are based in Cape Town. The artists work in a variety of techniques and mediums which depict their own unique experiences within the current social and political climate of South Africa. All exhibition pieces were created after 2020, and broach subjects such as identity, migration, land, heritage, and language. Essentially prompting a collective examination of what art can be in a post-pandemic world.
Simphiwe Kaka (1991) is a South African artist specializing in portraiture and oil on canvas. Kaka was a part of the City of Cape Town’s emerging artist program. Inspired by his immediate environment, Kaka often portrays rare, personal, and mysterious African subjects juxtaposed against fantastical landscapes where culture, the future, ritual, and the contemporary world meet and coexist. He says the reason for this is to inspire originality, non-conformity, and the desire for the youth to fully express themselves and change the world regardless of their demographics, race, or space in which they find themselves.
