An exhibition with a 7,794 mile journey, Transatlantic Hemispheres includes the work of six South African contemporary artists, all of whom are based in Cape Town. The artists work in a variety of techniques and mediums which depict their own unique experiences within the current social and political climate of South Africa. All exhibition pieces were created after 2020, and broach subjects such as identity, migration, land, heritage, and language. Essentially prompting a collective examination of what art can be in a post-pandemic world.
Nomusa Matshali (1986) graduated with a Fine Art B-tech from the Durban University of Technology in 2018. The Durban born artist’s work explores gender fluidity and queer identity within the context of South African society via the pseudo-persona of Titanium, who lives their life on an imaginary escape planet where gender is non-binary. Titanium is a persona and a utopia space, where Mtshali makes sense of their own world. Matshali quietly and persuasively challenges concepts of gender roles, gender expressions, and race - with the understanding that no one fits these boxes perfectly.
