This Ukhamba Basket made by renowned artist, Angeline Masuku, is an excellent collectible example of a traditional beer basket. The unique form of this basket is adorned with animal forms that inspired this artist - a reminder of where she comes from.
Masuku is an international award winning and renowned contemporary basket weaver, weaving in the Zulu tradition. Big, bold, and intricate contemporary shapes are her trademark. Born in rural South Africa, near Hlabisa, in the heart of Kwa-Zulu-Natal, Angeline has influence on her family and community members in training them to weave beautiful, functional, and culturally significant baskets. Dozens of women are now employed by her and she has changed her life, as well as theirs through opportunity. Her designs are her own and the ideas for the designs “come to her.” The shapes and designs are inspired by forms around her – children, animals, and plants. She has received the FNB Vita Award for Craft and has exhibited her work in fairs from Italy to various places in the USA – New York and Santa Fe, amongst others.
