This spiral patterned traditional Zulu beer basket is made from Ilala Palm, the cutting of the palm leaves does not threaten the plant. This bulb shaped beer basket is used to serve sorghum beer and is watertight. The dyes are made by hand from indigenous materials like roots, berries, bark, and leaves. It takes many days to even make the dye from these natural sources. The fading tradition of basket weaving in many regions of Africa combined with a resurgence in basket collecting around the world now make it one of the main sources of income for artisans who otherwise would not be employed.
Made in the Hlabisa region of Kwa-Zulu-Natal, South Africa.
